Legislation

Hawaiian Senate Bill 2571

On Tuesday, July 23, 2018, Hawaiian Governor David Ige signed into law Senate Bill 2571 (now Act 104). This law makes Hawaii the first state in the United States of America to ban the sale and distribution of sunscreens made with oxybenzone and octinoxate without a prescription from a healthcare provider.

This law took a year to come to fruition yet along the way many communities in the state of Hawaii committed to educating the local public and guests to the island about the dangers of sunscreen pollution.

The Maui Ocean Center was a prominent activist tackling this challenge. The group stopped selling harmful sunscreens in their gift store, wrote and designed blogs and infographics, testified to their local government, and hosted leading scientist on their podcast Sea Talk.
